| Description : | Horseradish peroxidase (donor:hydrogen-peroxide oxidoreductase, EC 1.11.1.7) (HRP) belongs to a family of proteins with ferriprotoporphyrin IX as a prosthetic group. These heme enzymes function to either activate dioxygen for incorporation into the substrate (oxygenase activity) or use peroxides for oxidation of the substrate (peroxidase activity). Peroxidase is found widely distributed in higher plants (horseradish, turnip, fig sap, tobacco, potato) and microorganisms (yeast cytochrome c). The present discussion focuses on the well-studied horseradish peroxidase. |
