Description : Fibrinogen is an acute phase protein that is part of the coagulation cascade of proteins. The end result of the cascade is the production of thrombin that converts fibrinogen to fibrin. Thrombin rapidly proteolysis fibrinogen, releasing fibrinopeptide A. The loss of this small peptide is not sufficient to make the resulting fibrin molecule insoluble, but it tends to form complexes with adjacent fibrin and fibrinogen molecules. Thrombin then cleaves a second peptide, fibrinopeptide B, from fibrin and the fibrin monomers formed then polymerize spontaneously to form an insoluble gel. The polymerized fibrin is held together by noncovalent and electrostatic forces and stabilized by the transamidating enzyme, factor XIIIa that is produced by the action of thrombin on factor XIII. The insoluble fibrin aggregates (clots) and aggregated platelets then block the damaged blood vessel and prevent further bleeding. The amount of fibrinogen in the plasma can serve as a nonspecific indicator of whether or not an inflammatory process is present in the body. Fibrinogen from any mammalian source will be cleaved by thrombin from any mammalian source.

Q&As (5)

Ask a question
How is FGA protein measured in clinical practice? 04/18/2023

FGA protein levels can be measured through laboratory tests such as fibrinogen assays and coagulation profiles.

How is FGA protein testing used in the evaluation of liver function? 02/03/2023

FGA protein testing is used as part of the assessment of liver function, as the liver is responsible for the synthesis of fibrinogen.

What are the implications of low FGA protein levels? 05/04/2021

Low FGA protein levels may lead to an increased risk of bleeding and impaired clot formation.

What conditions may lead to abnormal FGA protein levels? 11/19/2020

Conditions such as liver disease, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and congenital fibrinogen deficiencies can lead to abnormal FGA protein levels.

How are abnormal FGA protein levels managed? 09/17/2018

Treatment for abnormal FGA protein levels may involve addressing the underlying condition and, in some cases, administering fibrinogen replacement therapy.
