Description : | This gene encodes an intracellular calcium-binding protein belonging to the troponin C superfamily. Members of this protein family have six EF-hand domains which bind calcium. This protein plays a role in diverse cellular functions, including message targeting and intracellular calcium buffering. It also functions as a modulator of neuronal excitability, and is a diagnostic marker for some human diseases, including Hirschsprung disease and some cancers. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Jun 2010] |

Q&As (5)
Ask a questionWhile there are no specific drugs targeting CALB2, research into calcium homeostasis modulation and CALB2's role in disease may lead to potential therapeutic avenues.
CALB2 helps establish and maintain calcium gradients within neurons, ensuring proper functioning of processes such as neurotransmission, dendritic integration, and synaptic plasticity by fine-tuning local calcium concentrations.
CALB2 can interact with transcription factors and co-factors involved in calcium-dependent gene expression, influencing the activation or repression of specific genes in response to changes in intracellular calcium levels.
CALB2 dynamically binds and releases calcium ions in response to changes in intracellular calcium concentration, fine-tuning calcium signaling during neuronal activity and synaptic transmission.
CALB2 is abundantly expressed in various neuronal populations, including cerebellar granule cells, interneurons in the cortex, and certain subtypes of neurons in the hippocampus.
