Description : Streptavidin is a protein that has similar binding properties to avidin. It is isolated from streptomyces avidinii. Streptavidin has a molecular weight of 60 KD and has 4 subunits. Each subunit can bind one molecule of biotin. Biotin is a 244 da water soluble vitamin. Streptavidin has an extremely high binding affinity (Kd=10 - 15 ) for biotin.
Species : Streptomyces avidinii
Form : 1 mg/ml in PBS (pH 7.4) containing 10 mg/ml BSA and 0.01% thimerosal
Storage : The reagent may be stored at 4 centigrade for short periods of one month or less. For longer periods, aliquot and store at -20 centigrade. Avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles. If slight precipitation occurs upon prolonged storage, clarify the solution by centrifugation before use.

Ask a question
How does Streptavidin differ from natural streptavidin in its formulation? 01/23/2022

Streptavidin formulations often include shortened variants (core streptavidin proteins) with shortened N and C termini compared to natural streptavidin. These variants offer improved characteristics in terms of homogeneity, solubility, resistance to protein hydrolysis, and accessibility of the biotin-binding pocket.

What is Streptavidin? 10/20/2021

Streptavidin is a 55kDa tetrameric protein secreted by Streptomyces avidinii, known for its strong binding affinity with biotin.

What is the binding partner of Streptavidin? 12/17/2020

Streptavidin tightly binds to biotin (sc-204706).

What is the dissociation constant (Kd) of the Biotin-Streptavidin complex? 01/22/2019

The dissociation constant (Kd) for the Biotin-Streptavidin complex is approximately ~10^15M, indicating an exceptionally strong binding affinity.

What are the key features of the Streptavidin/Biotin system? 03/18/2018

The Streptavidin/Biotin system exhibits one of the largest observed binding free energies, making it suitable for non-covalent binding of proteins and small ligands in aqueous solutions. The complex is also highly stable over a broad range of temperature and pH values.

What is the origin of Streptavidin? 03/05/2018

Streptavidin is produced by Streptomyces avidinii.

Why is Streptavidin widely used in molecular biology? 01/15/2017

Streptavidin is widely used in molecular biology due to its unique high affinity for biotin, making it a valuable tool for various applications.
