Description : | This gene encodes a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. The cytochrome P450 proteins are monooxygenases which catalyze many reactions involved in drug metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids and other lipids. This endoplasmic reticulum protein is expressed in the brain, where it converts cholesterol to 24S-hydroxycholesterol. While cholesterol cannot pass the blood-brain barrier, 24S-hydroxycholesterol can be secreted in the brain into the circulation to be returned to the liver for catabolism. |

Ask a questionResearch suggests that altered CYP46A1 activity and expression may serve as a biomarker for neurodegenerative diseases and could aid in early detection and monitoring of disease progression.
Dysregulation of CYP46A1-mediated cholesterol metabolism has been implicated in the pathogenesis of Huntington's disease, making it a potential therapeutic target.
Research is investigating the potential of targeting CYP46A1 for therapeutic interventions, such as the development of small molecule modulators to regulate its activity.
CYP46A1 activity influences the clearance of cholesterol from the brain, which may interact with the effects of cholesterol-lowering drugs, potentially affecting their efficacy.
Some genetic variations in the CYP46A1 gene have been linked to altered CYP46A1 activity and an increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases.
