Description : Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1), also known as retinal dehydrogenase 1, is the second enzyme of the major oxidative pathway of alcohol metabolism. Two major liver isoforms of this enzyme, cytosolic and mitochondrial, can be distinguished by their electrophoretic mobilities, kinetic properties, and subcellular localizations. ALDH1A1 also belongs to the group of corneal crystallins that help maintain the transparency of the cornea. (Retinal + NAD+ + H2O = retinoate + NADH).

Ask a question
How does ALDH1A1 contribute to cellular detoxification by metabolizing endogenous and exogenous aldehydes? 09/26/2021

ALDH1A1 contributes to cellular detoxification by metabolizing endogenous and exogenous aldehydes, reducing their potential cytotoxic effects.

What are the structural features of ALDH1A1 that are crucial for its catalytic activity, and how do substrate binding and cofactor interaction occur? 08/07/2021

ALDH1A1's catalytic activity depends on its conserved structural features. Substrate binding involves the aldehyde-binding pocket, and cofactor interaction occurs through the binding of NAD+.

How does ALDH1A1 participate in retinoid homeostasis, and what are the consequences of its dysregulation in diseases like vitamin A deficiency or excess? 12/04/2020

ALDH1A1 contributes to retinoid homeostasis by regulating the levels of active retinoic acid. Dysregulation may lead to diseases associated with vitamin A deficiency or excess.

What is the enzymatic function of ALDH1A1, and how does it catalyze the conversion of aldehydes? 08/14/2020

ALDH1A1 is an aldehyde dehydrogenase enzyme responsible for catalyzing the oxidation of retinaldehyde to retinoic acid, a critical step in the synthesis of retinoids.

Can you explain the role of ALDH1A1 in retinoic acid signaling and its impact on cellular processes, including gene expression and differentiation? 05/07/2018

ALDH1A1 plays a key role in retinoic acid signaling by generating active retinoic acid. This signaling pathway influences gene expression and cellular differentiation in various tissues.
