Description : The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the Ser/Thr protein kinase family, and protein kinase superfamily involved in signal transduction pathways. This gene is closely linked to DRD2 gene (GeneID:1813) on chr 11, and a well studied restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) designated TaqIA, was originally associated with the DRD2 gene, however, later was determined to be located in exon 8 of ANKK1 gene (PMIDs: 18621654, 15146457), where it causes a nonconservative amino acid substitution. It is not clear if this gene plays any role in neuropsychiatric disorders previously associated with Taq1A RFLP. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]

Ask a question
Can ANKK1 protein be targeted for therapeutic purposes? 09/13/2022

Currently, there are no specific targeted therapies available for ANKK1 protein. However, understanding its functions and associations may provide insights into developing potential treatment approaches in the future.

Can ANKK1 protein be used as a diagnostic or prognostic marker for any diseases or conditions? 08/01/2022

ANKK1 protein is still being studied in the context of disease associations, and its use as a diagnostic or prognostic marker is unclear at this time. Some research suggests that variations in the ANKK1 gene, such as the Taq1A polymorphism, may be associated with an increased risk for certain psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia and addiction. However, further research is needed to determine the clinical utility of ANKK1 protein as a diagnostic or prognostic marker.

Can variations in the ANKK1 gene affect an individual's response to certain medications? 03/31/2022

Some studies have suggested that variations in the ANKK1 gene, particularly the Taq1A polymorphism, may influence an individual's response to medications that affect dopamine signaling. For example, it has been suggested that individuals with the Taq1A A1 allele may have a different response to antipsychotic medications used to treat schizophrenia. However, the evidence is still limited and more research is needed to fully understand the impact of ANKK1 variations on medication response.

What are the specific regions or domains of ANKK1 protein? 12/17/2021

ANKK1 protein is composed of several domains, including ankyrin repeat domains and a protein kinase domain. These domains are involved in protein-protein interactions and enzymatic activities.

How is ANKK1 protein regulated or controlled? 05/04/2021

The regulation of ANKK1 protein is still being investigated. However, it is thought that its expression and activity can be influenced by various factors, including genetic and epigenetic mechanisms, as well as environmental factors.

Are there any animal models or experimental systems used to study ANKK1 protein? 01/11/2021

Yes, animal models have been used to study the role of ANKK1 protein in various biological processes. Mice models with genetic modifications to the ANKK1 gene have been generated to explore its function in dopamine signaling and addiction-related behaviors. Additionally, cell culture systems and other experimental techniques are employed to investigate ANKK1 expression, localization, and interactions with other molecules. These models provide valuable insights into the role of ANKK1 in cellular physiology and disease mechanisms.

Is ANKK1 protein expressed in specific tissues or organs? 12/24/2020

ANKK1 protein is known to be expressed in various tissues and organs, including the brain, liver, kidney, and bone. In the brain, ANKK1 is predominantly found in regions associated with dopamine signaling, such as the striatum. However, the exact tissue-specific expression pattern and its functional implications in different organs are still being investigated.

Is there any ongoing research or future directions for ANKK1 protein studies? 07/01/2020

ANKK1 protein continues to be an area of active research. Future studies are likely to focus on further elucidating its role in dopamine receptor signaling and addiction, as well as its potential involvement in other neurological and psychiatric disorders. Additionally, investigations into the regulation and functional implications of ANKK1, as well as its potential as a therapeutic target, are also emerging areas of interest.

Are there any known interactions of ANKK1 protein with other proteins or molecules? 02/05/2020

ANKK1 protein is known to interact with dopamine receptors, particularly the D2-like receptors (DRD2, DRD3, DRD4). This interaction suggests a role in modulating dopamine receptor signaling and may contribute to its involvement in reward systems and addiction.

Are there any inhibitors or activators of ANKK1 protein? 10/15/2019

Currently, there are no known specific inhibitors or activators of ANKK1 protein. The functional implications of ANKK1 and its potential as a therapeutic target are still being explored.
