Description : CSF1R, also known as macrophage colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor, is a member of the type 3 subfamily of receptor tyrosine kinases. It is expressed primarily on cells of the monocyte and macrophage lineage, stem cells, and in the developing placenta and mediates most of the biological effects of this cytokine. This protein is consisted by an extracellular ligand-binding domain, a single membrane-spanning segment, and an intracellular tyrosine kinase domain. CSF1 and this receptor were initially implicated as essential for normal monocyte development as well as for trophoblastic implantation. This apparent role of CSF1/CSF1R in normal mammary gland development is very intriguing because this relationship has also been found in the biology of breast cancer in which abnormal expression of CSF1 and its receptor. Also, increased levels of CSF1R are found in microglia in Alzheimer's disease and after brain injuries. The increased receptor expression causes microglia to become more active.

        Q&As (5)

        Ask a question
Are there any FDA-approved drugs targeting CSF1R for clinical use? 07/20/2021

Yes, drugs like pexidartinib have been approved for the treatment of certain rare tumors called tenosynovial giant cell tumors (TGCT) that overexpress CSF1R.

How can CSF1R inhibitors impact the tumor microenvironment? 10/22/2018

CSF1R inhibitors can modulate the tumor microenvironment by reducing the number of tumor-associated macrophages and promoting an anti-tumor immune response.

Can CSF1R inhibitors be used in combination with other cancer treatments? 09/20/2018

Yes, CSF1R inhibitors are often used in combination with chemotherapy and immunotherapy to enhance treatment effectiveness.

What are the potential clinical applications of CSF1R inhibitors? 01/21/2017

CSF1R inhibitors are being investigated for cancer therapy to block tumor-promoting macrophages and slow down cancer progression.

Can CSF1R inhibitors be used to treat neurodegenerative diseases? 12/04/2016

Research is ongoing, and CSF1R inhibitors are being explored as a potential therapy for neurodegenerative diseases, but no FDA-approved treatments currently exist.
