Description : Secreted frizzled-related protein 5 (SFRP5) is a member of the SFRP family that contains a cysteine-rich domain homologous to the putative Wnt-binding site of Frizzled proteins. SFRPs act as soluble modulators of Wnt signaling. SFRP5 and SFRP1 may be involved in determining the polarity of photoreceptor cells in the retina. SFRP5 is highly expressed in the retinal pigment epithelium, and moderately expressed in the pancreas.

Ask a question
How is SFRP5 expression regulated at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels, and what factors influence its expression in different tissues? 02/09/2022

SFRP5 expression is regulated by various factors, including transcriptional regulators and microRNAs. Tissue-specific expression is influenced by developmental cues and environmental signals.

Can you elaborate on the structural features of the SFRP5 protein and how they contribute to its interactions with Wnt ligands? 11/19/2021

SFRP5 has a cysteine-rich domain that interacts with Wnt ligands, preventing their binding to Frizzled receptors. The structural configuration is crucial for modulating Wnt signaling.

Are there any identified genetic variations or polymorphisms in the SFRP5 gene, and how might they influence individual susceptibility to certain diseases? 01/25/2020

Genetic variations in the SFRP5 gene have been identified, and certain polymorphisms are associated with altered susceptibility to diseases such as cancer and metabolic disorders.

How does SFRP5 contribute to tissue regeneration and repair, and what are the implications for regenerative medicine? 06/08/2019

SFRP5 plays a role in tissue regeneration by modulating Wnt signaling during repair processes. Understanding its function contributes to the development of regenerative medicine strategies.

What are the implications of altered SFRP5 expression in diseases, particularly in conditions where dysregulated Wnt signaling is implicated? 09/02/2018

Altered SFRP5 expression is associated with various diseases, including cancer and metabolic disorders, where dysregulated Wnt signaling plays a role in disease progression.
