||Recombinant humanCA8 protein fused to His-tag at N-terminus, was expressed in E. coli andpurified by using conventional chromatography.
||CA8 wasinitially named CA-related protein because of sequence similarity to otherknown carbonic anhydrase genes. However, this protein lacks carbonicanhydrase activity (i.e., the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide). Itcontinues to carry a carbonic anhydrase designation based on clear sequenceidentity to other members of the carbonic anhydrase gene family. Defects inCA8 are the cause of cerebellar ataxia mental retardation and dysequilibriumsyndrome type 3 (CMARQ3).
