Description : African swine fever virus (ASFV) is a large, double-stranded DNA virus and the sole member of the Asfarviridae family. ASFV infects domestic pigs, wild boars, warthogs, and bush pigs, as well as soft ticks (Ornithodoros erraticus), which likely act as a vector. The ASFV genome (170 to 193 kbp depending on isolate) encodes 150 to 200 proteins, of which ~50 of them are structural. These proteins include pp220, pp62, p72, p54, p30, and CD2v, and serve as the major component of virus particles with roles in attachment, entry, and replication (Jia et al., 2017). Outbreaks have been reported in Africa and parts of Europe, South America, and the Caribbean. More recently (since 2007) the disease has been reported in multiple countries across Africa, Asia and Europe, in both domestic and wild pigs (OIE, 2018). There is currently no approved vaccine for ASF.
P30 is a 30-kDa phosphoprotein of ASFV that is synthesized, membrane localized, and released into the culture medium at early times after infection. Sequence analysis of the p30 open reading frame predicts a highly antigenic protein with putative phosphorylation, glycosylation, and membrane attachment sites (Afonso et al., 1992). Among the structural proteins that compose the virion of ASFV, p30 is one of the most immunogenic proteins and being produced during early stage of ASFV infection makes it a good target for diagnostic assays to detect ASFV infection (Petrovan et al. 2019).
