Description : The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family. FGF family members possess broad mitogenic and cell survival activities, and are involved in a variety of biological processes, including embryonic development, cell growth, morphogenesis, tissue repair, tumor growth and invasion. This protein is known to be a factor that supports androgen and anchorage independent growth of mammary tumor cells. Overexpression of this gene has been shown to increase tumor growth and angiogensis. The adult expression of this gene is restricted to testes and ovaries. Temporal and spatial pattern of this gene expression suggests its function as an embryonic epithelial factor. Studies of the mouse and chick homologs revealed roles in midbrain and limb development, organogenesis, embryo gastrulation and left-right axis determination. The alternative splicing of this gene results in four transcript variants.

        Q&As (5)

        Ask a question
How does FGF8 participate in embryonic development, particularly in the patterning of the midbrain and limb buds, and what molecular events coordinate its spatial and temporal expression? 06/03/2021

FGF8 is essential for midbrain and limb bud patterning during embryonic development. Spatial and temporal expression is coordinated by signaling pathways and transcription factors that regulate FGF8 expression.

How do post-translational modifications, such as glycosylation, impact the function of FGF8, and what is the significance of these modifications in modulating ligand-receptor interactions? 09/14/2020

Post-translational modifications, including glycosylation, can influence FGF8 function. Glycosylation may modulate ligand-receptor interactions, affecting the specificity and strength of FGF8 signaling.

What is the structural classification of FGF8, and how does its tertiary structure influence interactions with FGF receptors and heparin sulfate proteoglycans? 08/27/2019

FGF8 is a member of the fibroblast growth factor family with a β-trefoil tertiary structure. This structure dictates its binding to FGF receptors and heparin sulfate proteoglycans, essential for signal transduction.

How does FGF8 participate in the crosstalk between different signaling pathways, such as Wnt and Shh, and what are the consequences for tissue morphogenesis and organogenesis? 03/18/2019

FGF8 engages in crosstalk with pathways like Wnt and Shh during tissue morphogenesis. This interaction influences organogenesis by coordinating cellular processes and ensuring proper tissue patterning.

Can you discuss the interactions between FGF8 and the extracellular matrix, and how these interactions influence the stability and bioavailability of FGF8 ligands in the tissue microenvironment? 02/05/2018

FGF8 interacts with the extracellular matrix, affecting ligand stability and bioavailability. This interaction modulates FGF8 diffusion and gradients in the tissue microenvironment.
