• Description: ISL1 is a transcription factor that has been shown to bind a cis-acting domain of the insulin gene enhancer. It contains two N-terminal LIM zinc-binding domains, and one homeobox DNA-binding domain. During embryonic development, ISL1 has been identified as a marker for cardiovascular progenitor cells that form the three major cell types in the heart (cardiac, smooth muscle, and endothelial cells). In addition, ISL1 is a marker for endocrine progenitor cells in the pancreas, and plays a critical role in the development of mature islet beta cells.
