Il5

Official Full Name
interleukin 5

Overview
This gene encodes a cytokine that acts as a growth and differentiation factor for both B cells and eosinophils. The encoded cytokine plays a major role in the regulation of eosinophil formation, maturation, recruitment and survival. The increased production of this cytokine may be related to pathogenesis of eosinophil-dependent inflammatory diseases. This cytokine functions by binding to its receptor, which is a heterodimer, whose beta subunit is shared with the receptors for interleukine 3 (IL3) and colony stimulating factor 2 (CSF2/GM-CSF). This gene is located on chromosome 5 within a cytokine gene cluster which includes interleukin 4 (IL4), interleukin 13 (IL13), and CSF2 . This gene, IL4, and IL13 may be regulated coordinately by long-range regulatory elements spread over 120 kilobases on chromosome 5q31. -

Il5 has several biochemical functions, for example, cytokine activity, growth factor activity, interleukin-5 receptor binding. Some of the functions are cooperated with other proteins, some of the functions could acted by Il5 itself. We selected most functions Il5 had, and list some proteins which have the same functions with Il5. You can find most of the proteins on our site.

Q&As (6)
Ask a questionInhibit the creatinine kinase level in the blood of patients with tuberous sclerosis, reduce the inflammatory response, and improve the quality of life of patients.
IL5 can reduce the number of eosinophils in the nasal mucosa of patients with allergic rhinitis, reducing the symptoms of allergic reactions, such as sneezing, runny nose and nasal congestion.
Stimulate the proliferation and differentiation of white blood cells, promote the function of the immune system, and is used to treat diseases such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, nodular sclerosis and some malignant tumors.
Cause mild side effects such as headache, nausea, vomiting, and serious side effects such as allergic reactions if the dose is too large or allergic.
IL5 cannot be administered orally, only by injection or intravenous drip.
IL5 can reduce the number of eosinophils in the lungs of asthma patients, reduce the frequency and severity of asthma attacks, and improve the quality of life of patients.
