Description : | This gene encodes a member of the lysyl oxidase gene family. The prototypic member of the family is essential to the biogenesis of connective tissue, encoding an extracellular copper-dependent amine oxidase that catalyses the first step in the formation of crosslinks in collagens and elastin. A highly conserved amino acid sequence at the C-terminus end appears to be sufficient for amine oxidase activity, suggesting that each family member may retain this function. The N-terminus is poorly conserved and may impart additional roles in developmental regulation, senescence, tumor suppression, cell growth control, and chemotaxis to each member of the family. |

Q&As (5)
Ask a questionLOXL2 promotes the cross-linking of elastin fibers, affecting tissue elasticity. Understanding these mechanisms can have implications in diseases where tissue flexibility is crucial, such as in cardiovascular conditions.
LOXL2 is involved in tissue repair and wound healing by modulating the extracellular matrix. Targeting LOXL2 may offer therapeutic opportunities to enhance or control the wound healing process.
Elevated levels of LOXL2 have been associated with certain diseases. Measuring LOXL2 levels can potentially serve as a diagnostic marker for conditions such as liver fibrosis and certain cancers.
Yes, several clinical trials are exploring the potential of LOXL2 inhibitors in treating fibrosis and cancer. These trials aim to validate the efficacy and safety of targeting LOXL2 in clinical settings.
LOXL2 is implicated in fibrosis as it plays a key role in collagen cross-linking, influencing tissue stiffness and architecture, making it a potential target for anti-fibrotic therapies.
