                                    | Description : | Carbonic anhydrase III is part of a multigene family that encodes carbonic anhydrase isozymes which are a class of metalloenzymes that catalyze the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide and are differentially expressed in various cell types. Carbonic anhydrase III expression is strictly tissue specific and present at high levels in skeletal muscle and much lower levels in cardiac and smooth muscle. CA3 catalyses swift conversion of carbon dioxide to bicarbonate and protons (CO2 + H2O = HCO3 + H+). CA3 participates in a variety of biological processes, including respiration, calcifica-tion, acid-base balance, bone resorption and the formation of aqueous humor, cerebrospinal fluid, saliva and gastric juice. CA3 includes a zinc ion in its active site and maintains acid-base balance in blood and other tissues, and to help transport carbon dioxide of tissues. |
