Description : CD55, also known as Complement decay-accelerating factor, GPI-anchored, is a member of the RCA(regulators of complement activation) family characterized by four to 30 SCRs(short consensus repeats) in their plasma-exposed regions. It is physiologically acting as an inhibitor of the complement system, but is also broadly expressed in malignant tumours.

Ask a question
How do genetic variations in CD55 influence susceptibility to complement-mediated disorders, and what are the molecular mechanisms involved? 03/28/2022

Genetic variations in CD55 may influence susceptibility to complement-mediated disorders by affecting the protein's ability to regulate complement activation. This can lead to conditions like paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH).

How does CD55 contribute to the modulation of immune responses beyond its role in complement regulation? 05/22/2021

CD55 has immunomodulatory functions beyond complement regulation, influencing T cell responses and contributing to the maintenance of immune tolerance.

What role does CD55 play in protecting cells from complement-mediated lysis, and how does it contribute to immune evasion? 08/09/2019

CD55 protects cells from complement-mediated lysis by preventing the formation of membrane attack complexes. This contributes to immune evasion by pathogens and self-cells alike.

Can you elaborate on the structural domains of CD55 and how they mediate its interactions with complement components? 03/14/2018

CD55 consists of extracellular domains responsible for interactions with complement proteins, particularly C3b and C4b. These interactions prevent the formation of membrane attack complexes on host cells.

Can you discuss the involvement of CD55 in various diseases, including autoimmune disorders and infectious diseases? 01/06/2018

CD55 dysregulation is associated with autoimmune disorders, where it may contribute to immune system overactivity. Additionally, some pathogens exploit CD55 to evade host immune responses.
