Description : The protein encoded by the classic Mbp gene is a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system. However, Mbp-related transcripts are also present in the bone marrow and the immune system. These mRNAs arise from the long Mbp gene (otherwise called "Golli-Mbp") that contains 3 additional exons located upstream of the classic Mbp exons. Alternative splicing from the Golli and the Mbp transcription start sites gives rise to 2 sets of Mbp-related transcripts and gene products. The Golli mRNAs contain 3 exons unique to Golli-Mbp, spliced in-frame to 1 or more Mbp exons. They encode hybrid proteins that have N-terminal Golli aa sequence linked to Mbp aa sequence. The second family of transcripts contain only Mbp exons and produce the well characterized myelin basic proteins. This complex gene structure is conserved among species suggesting that the Mbp transcription unit is an integral part of the Golli transcription unit and that this arrangement is important for the function and/or regulation of these genes. Mutation of the Mbp gene is associated with the 'shiverer' and 'myelin deficient' phenotypes in mouse.

        Q&As (7)

        Ask a question
What is the primary function of the MBP gene and its encoded protein? 09/30/2022

The MBP gene encodes the Myelin Basic Protein, which is a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system.

How is MBP expression regulated during neural development? 01/11/2021

MBP expression is tightly regulated during neural development. It increases as oligodendrocytes differentiate and begin to form the myelin sheath around axons.

What role does MBP play in multiple sclerosis (MS)? 09/29/2020

In multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune disease, MBP is one of the targets for immune cells. The immune system attacks and degrades the myelin sheath, leading to the characteristic symptoms of MS.

What are the implications of MBP in demyelinating diseases beyond MS? 09/20/2019

Other than MS, demyelinating diseases like Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease and some leukodystrophies can be linked to issues with MBP. These conditions can lead to a range of neurological symptoms due to impaired nerve transmission.

Are there any therapeutic strategies targeting MBP or its pathways in neurodegenerative diseases? 04/30/2019

Therapeutic strategies targeting MBP mainly focus on preventing the immune system from attacking it, especially in the context of MS. This includes the development of immunomodulatory drugs and therapies to promote remyelination.

Are there any known diseases or conditions associated with mutations or dysregulation of MBP? 03/12/2019

Beyond MS, mutations or dysregulation of MBP can lead to other rare demyelinating diseases and some forms of leukodystrophy.

How does MBP contribute to the structure and function of myelin sheaths in the nervous system? 07/14/2018

MBP plays a crucial role in the formation of the myelin sheath, a fatty layer that insulates nerve fibers. It helps compact and stabilize the layers of myelin, ensuring efficient nerve signal transmission.
