Description : | Plays a key role in secretory granule-dependent cell death, and in defense against virus-infected or neoplastic cells. Can insert into the mbrane of target cells in its calcium-bound form, oligomerize and form large pores. Promotes cytolysis and apoptosis of target cells by facilitating the uptake of cytotoxic granzymes. |

Q&As (7)
Ask a questionSignaling pathways and stimuli such as T cell receptor (TCR) activation and exposure to infected cells influence the expression of perforin (PRF1) in immune cells.
PRF1 expression is particularly upregulated or modulated in cytotoxic immune cells such as cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) and natural killer (NK) cells.
Dysregulation or abnormal expression of PRF1 is associated with conditions like hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and certain autoimmune disorders.
Perforin (PRF1) expression changes during immune activation, often being upregulated in response to various stimuli.
The balance between upregulation and downregulation of PRF1 is influenced by various factors, including the type of immune response and the microenvironment.
Altered PRF1 expression is significant for immune surveillance, as it plays a crucial role in the cytotoxicity of immune cells against infected or aberrant cells.
PRF1 contributes to immune responses by enabling immune cells to induce apoptosis in target cells, contributing to cytotoxicity.
