Description : | Cytochrome c, or cyt c, is a small heme protein found loosely associated with the inner membrane of the mitochondrion. It belongs to the cytochrome c family of proteins. It is a highly soluble protein, unlike other cytochromes, with a solubility of about 100 g/L and is an essential component of the electron transport chain, where it carries one electron. It is capable of undergoing oxidation and reduction, but does not bind oxygen. It transfers electrons between Complexes III and IV. In humans, cytochrome c is encoded by the CYCS gene. |

Q&As (7)
Ask a questionBcl-2 family proteins regulate CYCS release, balancing pro- and anti-apoptotic signals.
In apoptosis, CYCS activates caspases after being released into the cytosol.
It transports electrons in the mitochondrial respiratory chain, aiding ATP production.
Dysregulated CYCS activity can lead to impaired cellular energy production or excessive cell death.
CYCS is crucial for electron transport in mitochondria and inducing apoptosis.
Alterations in CYCS are linked to various diseases, including neurodegenerative conditions and cancer.
Therapeutic strategies may aim to modulate CYCS activity, influencing apoptosis in diseases like cancer.
