Description : Cytochrome c, or cyt c, is a small heme protein found loosely associated with the inner membrane of the mitochondrion. It belongs to the cytochrome c family of proteins. It is a highly soluble protein, unlike other cytochromes, with a solubility of about 100 g/L and is an essential component of the electron transport chain, where it carries one electron. It is capable of undergoing oxidation and reduction, but does not bind oxygen. It transfers electrons between Complexes III and IV. In humans, cytochrome c is encoded by the CYCS gene.

Ask a question
How is the release of CYCS from mitochondria regulated? 12/07/2022

Bcl-2 family proteins regulate CYCS release, balancing pro- and anti-apoptotic signals.

What is the role of CYCS in apoptosis? 08/21/2022

In apoptosis, CYCS activates caspases after being released into the cytosol.

How does CYCS contribute to mitochondrial function? 04/16/2022

It transports electrons in the mitochondrial respiratory chain, aiding ATP production.

What happens when there is dysregulation in CYCS activity? 03/19/2022

Dysregulated CYCS activity can lead to impaired cellular energy production or excessive cell death.

What is the primary biological role of CYCS in cellular processes? 09/06/2021

CYCS is crucial for electron transport in mitochondria and inducing apoptosis.

How is CYCS implicated in various diseases? 03/28/2021

Alterations in CYCS are linked to various diseases, including neurodegenerative conditions and cancer.

Are there any therapeutic strategies targeting CYCS? 11/07/2018

Therapeutic strategies may aim to modulate CYCS activity, influencing apoptosis in diseases like cancer.
