Description : | Beta-2-Microglobulin (b2M)lies lateral to the α3 chain on the cell surface. Unlike α3, β2 has no transmembrane region. Directly above β2 lies the α1 chain, which itself is lateral to the α2. β2 microglobulin associates not only with the alpha chain of MHC class I molecules, but also with class I-like molecules such as CD1 and Qa.An additional function is association with the HFE protein, together regulating the expression of hepcidin in the liver which targets the iron transporter ferroportin on the cytoplasmic membrane of enterocytes and macrophages for degradation resulting in decreased iron uptake from food and iron release from recycled red blood cells respectively. Loss of this function causes iron excess and hemochromatosis. |

Q&As (6)
Ask a questionThe normal reference range for B2M varies depending on age, gender, weight, individual differences, and other factors. In general, the normal reference range is between 0~3.0mg/L.
Causes of reduced B2M include liver and kidney failure, tuberculosis, HIV infection, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus and other diseases.
B2M plays an important role in the diagnosis and prognosis assessment of malignancies such as lymphoma and multiple myeloma. Elevated B2M levels can also indicate worsening or recurrence of certain autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus.
It has a variety of physiological functions in the immune system, including inducing immune response, participating in lymphocyte proliferation and differentiation, regulating immune tolerance, and participating in tumor immune surveillance.
The levels can be affected by a variety of factors, such as cancer, inflammation, autoimmune diseases, infections, medications, etc.
This is associated with many diseases, including lymphoma, normal stress hydrocephalus, HIV infection, rheumatoid arthritis, nephrotic syndrome, cirrhosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, etc.
