Description : This gene encodes cytosolic alanine aminotransaminase 1 (ALT1); also known as glutamate-pyruvate transaminase 1. This enzyme catalyzes the reversible transamination between alanine and 2-oxoglutarate to generate pyruvate and glutamate and, therefore, plays a key role in the intermediary metabolism of glucose and amino acids. Serum activity levels of this enzyme are routinely used as a biomarker of liver injury caused by drug toxicity, infection, alcohol, and steatosis. A related gene on chromosome 16 encodes a putative mitochondrial alanine aminotransaminase.
Tissue specificity : Liver, kidney, heart, and skeletal muscles. Expressed at moderate levels in the adipose tissue.
Biological activity : Specific activity:29 U/mg protein.
Form : Lyophilised
Storage buffer : Preservative: NoneConstituents: 100mM Sodium chloride, 10mM Tris HCl, 1mM EDTA, 1mM DTE, 10mM alpha-Ketoglutarate, 20μg/ml Pyridoxal-5-phosphate, pH 7.0
Storage : Shipped at 4°C. Upon delivery aliquot and store at -20°C. Avoid freeze / thaw cycles.
Sequence Similarities : Belongs to the class-I pyridoxal-phosphate-dependent aminotransferase family. Alanine aminotransferase subfamily.
Gene Name : GPT glutamic-pyruvate transaminase (alanine aminotransferase) [ Homo sapiens ]
Official Symbol : GPT

Ask a question
What role does the GPT gene, including GPT1 and GPT2 subtypes, play in glucose and amino acid metabolism, and how is it implicated in cancer-related tumorigenesis? 05/01/2022

The GPT gene, encompassing GPT1 and GPT2, is pivotal in glucose and amino acid metabolism. GPT2 is notably linked to tumorigenesis in various cancers, while the involvement of GPT1 in cancer remains uncertain and requires further exploration.

What role does the GPT gene, encoding cytosolic alanine aminotransaminase 1 (ALT1), play in cellular metabolism and liver function? 04/13/2021

The GPT gene encodes ALT1, a key enzyme in cellular metabolism. ALT1 facilitates the reversible transamination between alanine and 2-oxoglutarate, crucial for glucose and amino acid metabolism. Elevated serum ALT1 levels are commonly used as a biomarker for liver injury caused by drug toxicity, infection, alcohol, and steatosis.

How does the combined SMS and GPT signature affect LSCC patient prognosis, and what factors explain the discrepancy between SMS transcriptional and protein levels? 08/04/2020

SMS protein alone doesn't impact LSCC patient prognosis, but when combined with GPT, it shows significance. Inconsistency between SMS transcriptional and protein levels may stem from various factors, including the involvement of regulatory elements and different post-transcriptional and post-translational modifications.

How does GPT gene expression, assessed in LSCC tissues and cell lines, correlate with SMS and impact overall survival rates in LSCC patients? 01/06/2019

Analysis of LSCC tissues and cell lines revealed an inverse relationship between GPT and SMS expressions, confirmed through qRT-PCR and TCGA data. GPT protein, primarily located in the epithelium, was down-regulated in LSCC tissues.

How does GPT gene expression in tissues like skeletal muscle, kidney, and liver reflect cancer-related metabolic changes? 05/12/2018

GPT gene expression serves as a marker for cancer-induced metabolic reprogramming in tissues, indicating shifts in energy metabolism and biosynthetic processes.
