Description : | This gene encodes a secreted ligand of the TGF-beta (transforming growth factor-beta) superfamily of proteins. Ligands of this family bind various TGF-beta receptors leading to recruitment and activation of SMAD family transcription factors that regulate gene expression. The encoded preproprotein is proteolytically processed to generate each subunit of the disulfide-linked homodimer. This protein plays a role ocular and skeletal development. Mutations in this gene are associated with microphthalmia, coloboma, and skeletal abnormalities in human patients. |

Q&As (5)
Ask a questionGDF3 signaling may crosstalk with Wnt, Notch, and other signaling pathways, modulating their activities and integrating them into a complex regulatory network during development.
GDF3 is implicated in organogenesis, influencing the development of various tissues and organs, including the heart, nervous system, and mesoderm-derived structures.
Post-translational modifications, such as glycosylation and phosphorylation, play roles in regulating GDF3 activity, influencing its stability, secretion, and interaction with receptors.
GDF3 activates the SMAD signaling pathway, influencing cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis, especially during early embryonic development.
GDF3 is essential for germ cell development and contributes to the establishment of primordial germ cells, influencing fertility and reproductive success.
