Description : Granulins are a family of secreted, glycosylated peptides that are cleaved from a single precursor protein with 7.5 repeats of a highly conserved 12-cysteine granulin/epithelin motif. The 88 kDa precursor protein, progranulin, is also called proepithelin and PC cell-derived growth factor. Cleavage of the signal peptide produces mature granulin which can be further cleaved into a variety of active, 6 kDa peptides. These smaller cleavage products are named granulin A, granulin B, granulin C, etc. Epithelins 1 and 2 are synonymous with granulins A and B, respectively. Both the peptides and intact granulin protein regulate cell growth. However, different members of the granulin protein family may act as inhibitors, stimulators, or have dual actions on cell growth. Granulin family members are important in normal development, wound healing, and tumorigenesis. [provided by RefSeq

Are there have any relationship between GRN protein and TDP-43 protein? 11/04/2019

There is an interaction between GRN protein and TDP-43 protein, and together they are involved in the development of neurodegenerative diseases.

Why does GRN protein play a role in neuroprotection? 07/21/2019

GRN protein is involved in neuroprotection by regulating cell survival, apoptosis, inflammatory response and other pathways. It may work by promoting neuronal survival, suppressing inflammatory responses, and more.

What is the diagnostic significance of GRN protein in neurodegenerative diseases? 06/17/2019

Abnormal expression of GRN protein is related to neurodegenerative diseases, and detecting the expression level of GRN protein or gene mutation can help diagnose these diseases and provide reference for treatment and prognosis assessment.

What is the role of GRN protein in Alzheimer's disease? 05/05/2019

The role of GRN protein in Alzheimer's disease is not fully understood, but studies have shown that it is involved in the metabolism and clearance of β-amyloid, which may have an important impact on the pathological process.

Are there transcription factors involved in the regulation of GRN protein expression? 02/26/2019

Yes, some transcription factors have been found to regulate the expression of GRN proteins, including CREB, SMAD, etc.

Which role of GRN protein in prefrontal dementia? 02/08/2019

GRN protein plays an important role in prefrontal dementia. It is involved in the survival and maintenance of nerve cells, and its deletion or mutation may lead to degenerative loss of nerve cells.
