Description : | Megakaryocyte potentiating factor is a member of the mesothelin family. This family consists of several mammalian pre-pro-megakaryocyte potentiating factor precursor (MPF) or mesothelin proteins. Both megakaryocyte potentiating factor and the cleaved form of mesothelin are N-glycosylated. Mesothelin is a tumour differentiation antigen that is normally present on the mesothelial cells lining the pleura, peritoneum and pericardium. Megakaryocyte potentiating factor is secreted by several mesothelioma cell lines and is frequently elevated in the blood of patients with mesothelioma. Measurement of this protein may be useful in following the response of mesothelioma to treatment. Megakaryocyte potentiating factor interacts with MUC16 and potentiates megakaryocyte colony formation in vitro. Its membrane-anchored forms may play a role in cellular adhesion. |
