Description : This gene encodes a member of the fibroblast growth factor family of proteins, which possess broad mitogenic and cell survival activities and are involved in a variety of biological processes. The product of this gene regulates phosphate homeostasis and transport in the kidney. The full-length, functional protein may be deactivated via cleavage into N-terminal and C-terminal chains. Mutation of this cleavage site causes autosomal dominant hypophosphatemic rickets (ADHR). Mutations in this gene are also associated with hyperphosphatemic familial tumoral calcinosis (HFTC).

        Ask a question
What role does FGF23 play in chronic kidney disease? 06/12/2022

FGF23 levels are elevated in chronic kidney disease, contributing to mineral imbalance.

How is FGF23 implicated in cardiovascular health? 04/04/2022

High FGF23 levels are associated with increased cardiovascular risk.

How does FGF23 regulate phosphate and calcium homeostasis? 03/24/2022

It decreases renal phosphate reabsorption and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D production.

Are there known genetic mutations that affect FGF23 production or activity? 01/27/2022

Mutations in FGF23 or related proteins can lead to dysregulated phosphate metabolism.
