C-C motif chemokine 20 (CCL20), also known as liver activation regulated chemokine (LARC), Macrophage Inflammatory Protein-3 alpha (MIP-3 alpha), or Exodus, is a small cytokine belonging to the CC chemokine family. It is strongly chemotactic for lymphocytes and weakly attracts neutrophils. CCL20 is a ligand for the G protein-coupled receptor CCR6, and induces chemotactic migration in a wide range of CCR6-expressing cells including immature dendritic cells (DC), effector/memory T-cells and B-cells. CCL20 is implicated in the formation and function of mucosal lymphoid tissues via chemoattraction of lymphocytes and dendritic cells towards the epithelial cells surrounding these tissues. CCL20 is expressed in the skin and contributes to the chronic inflammation of psoriasis. |
