SAA1 may help repair damaged tissues, acts as anantibacterial agent, and signal the migration of germ-fighting cells to sitesof infection. Elevated levels of SAA over time predispose secondaryamyloidosis, extracellular accumulation of amyloid fibrils, derived from a circulatingprecursor, in various tissues and organs. The most common form of amyloidosisoccurs secondary to chronic inflammatory disease, particularly rheumatoidarthritis.
