Description : Serum amyloidA1(SAA1) protein is made primarily in the liver and circulates in low levelsin the blood. This protein appears to play a role in the immune system.Levels of this protein increase in the blood and other tissues underconditions of inflammation. SAA1 may help repair damaged tissues, acts as anantibacterial agent, and signal the migration of germ-fighting cells to sitesof infection. Elevated levels of SAA over time predispose secondaryamyloidosis, extracellular accumulation of amyloid fibrils, derived from a circulatingprecursor, in various tissues and organs. The most common form of amyloidosisoccurs secondary to chronic inflammatory disease, particularly rheumatoidarthritis.
